Q&A With Tory Sneden
Whats your title / what do you do?
I’m the PR Director at an adorable and affordable indie makeup brand, Glamour Dolls Makeup (best known for the brand behind the Lisa Frank makeup collaboration. Cue 90’s swoon!!) and am a podcaster by night. I specialize in influencer marketing and interview your favorite YouTube & Instagram stars about their life in front of and behind the camera as part of my podcast, Beyond the Branding: Interviews with Influencers.
How did you get into the business you are in today?
I always knew I’d end up in PR because I can talk to a brick wall and could never be chained to a desk. Public Relations is a pretty hard-to-define profession but essentially, I work with media (magazine editors, YouTube stars, Instagram influencers, etc.) and educate them about my makeup line in hopes they fall in love with it and share it with their audience. I interned while in college at MAC Cosmetics in the Global Communications department and my career took off from there!
What is the biggest challenge you have faced & overcame?
My first job was at IT Cosmetics, the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced was building a reputation for a brand with no brand awareness within the online beauty community. Influencers had never heard of or tried IT Cosmetics prior to my joining the team, and now IT Cosmetics is a household name on YouTube and Instagram.
Whats your work moto?
“In Advertising you pay, in PR you pray!”
Whats the best advice to give someone trying to get in PR?
INTERN. Get as much real-world experience you can. You cannot learn the important parts of PR by sitting in a classroom, you have to get out into the world and start building relationships, or you won’t be successful when pitching your products to media.
What can you tell someone thinking about starting a podcast?
OMG DO IT! 2017 and 2018 will be the year of audio, everyone should start a podcast who feels as though they can bring value to a specific niche or conversation!!!!
What would you want to tell your 15-year-old self?
Slow down and trust your skill set. I was quick to “grow up” because I didn’t have confidence that I’d land on my feet if I spent time hanging out with friends or cultivating hobbies that weren’t related to my future profession. So yeah, trust the universe…it has your back!
Anything else you want to mention?
If you’ve ever wondered what it was like to be an influencer, or maybe you wanted to start creating content on YouTube or social media (like, as a profession!!) DEFINITELY subscribe to my podcast via iTunes
What does girl power mean to you?
To me? Girl power means taking control of your destiny and manifesting a career or future that you are proud of!
And that’s this week Wonderful Woman!
