Wonderful Woman: Vanessa Rizzo
Meet Vanessa Rizzo from Bergen County, New Jersey! She is a graduate from, Makeup Forever Academy in NYC. She is creative, extroverted, & artistic, this is her story as a professional makeup artist.
Q&A with Vanessa Rizzo
Q: What do you do?
A: I am a makeup artist.
Q: How did you get into the business you are in today?
A: I always loved makeup. In high school, I was always teaching my friends how to put it on and for every party, prom, or event I was always doing someone’s makeup. Fast forward a few years I had a very short-lived college career which led me to work at a retail store in the mall, which then led me to work at Sephora. From then on my professional career really fell into place. I went to the Makeup Forever Academy in NYC as well.
Q: What is the biggest challenge you have faced & overcame?
A: I think my biggest challenge is knowing where to start. When I realized I wanted to do makeup as a career, I had barely any professional quality makeup, no clients, and no idea how to get started. I just jumped right in. As I worked, with each paycheck I bought some makeup for my kit here and there. I did makeup cheap or for free for friends and family who recommended me to other people. Sephora brought me, freelance clients, as well and then the Academy gave me a portfolio and hooked me up with the opportunity to do makeup for photo shoots and New York Fashion Week.
Q: What is your work moto?
A: Just put yourself out there, put it out into the universe that you want it. Eventually, it’ll be returned to you.
Q: Whats the best advice to give someone trying to be a makeup artist?
A: Work at a counter or makeup store, you will get amazing experience and discounts. Don’t get discouraged, the industry is very over-saturated with people claiming to be “artists” but if you have the work ethic you’ll stand out.
Q: What would you want to tell your 15-year-old self?
A: I think I would want to say its okay to not follow the same path as everyone else. Follow what’s in your soul, where your passion is leading you. Don’t give in to the pressure to fit in.
Q: What does girl power mean to you?
A: Girl power means having confidence in yourself as a powerful, successful woman who don’t need no man!! Be confident in who you are, empower other women.
And that’s this week Wonderful Woman!
